History
After D-Day, the Battle of Normandy was fought in the hedgerows: Saint-Lô, the 'capital of ruins', was liberated in July 1944 at the cost of massive destruction, before Operation Cobra broke through towards Avranches and Brittany.
The circuit follows that route south-west, from the Bessin fishing ports to Granville, privateer town and Christian Dior's birthplace, ending at Mont-Saint-Michel, a thousand years of pilgrimage.
Tips
- Four days are enough if you keep driving to two hours a day.
- Try scallops in Port-en-Bessin (season October to May).
- Stay near the Mont on the last night to see the abbey lit up.
- Check the tides for the bay crossing from Genêts.
