At the historic heart of Paris, Notre-Dame embodies Gothic architecture and eight centuries of history. Discover its sculpted façades, restored interior and views from the Seine quays.
Work on Notre-Dame began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully. Built across several generations, its sculpted portals, rose windows and flying buttresses reflect the development of Gothic architecture. It became a major religious and historical landmark of the capital.
In the 19th century, restoration led notably by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc left a lasting mark on the building. The fire of 15 April 2019 destroyed its spire and much of its roof. Following an exceptional restoration, the cathedral reopened in December 2024 and remains an active place of worship.
