History of the place
Built for the 1889 World’s Fair, the Eiffel Tower overlooks the Seine, Les Invalides and the rooftops of Paris. Add a walk through the Champ-de-Mars or a view from the Trocadéro.
Built for the 1889 World’s Fair celebrating the centenary of the French Revolution, the tower was constructed by Gustave Eiffel’s company. Engineers Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier and architect Stephen Sauvestre played key roles in the design. Its metal structure became a striking demonstration of 19th-century industrial expertise.
Initially criticised by some artists, it was intended to stand for twenty years. Its value for scientific experiments and radio communications helped ensure its survival. Today its viewing levels reveal the Paris landscape, from the Seine and Les Invalides to Montmartre.
