Designed in the 17th century by Le Vau, Le Brun and Le Nôtre, Vaux-le-Vicomte unites architecture, interiors and gardens in an ensemble that inspired Versailles. Explore the park’s perspectives and the château’s salons.
Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV’s superintendent of finances, commissioned Vaux-le-Vicomte in the 17th century. He brought together architect Louis Le Vau, painter Charles Le Brun and landscape designer André Le Nôtre. Their work united the château, interiors and garden perspectives into an exceptionally coherent composition.
The celebration held on 17 August 1661 in the presence of Louis XIV remains one of the estate’s famous episodes; Fouquet was arrested a few weeks later. Vaux’s artistic team later worked at Versailles. In the 19th century, Alfred Sommier undertook the restoration of the château and gardens.
