La Fière Bridge and “Iron Mike”

The Merderet causeway, scene of the fiercest US airborne fighting.
From 6 to 9 June 1944 the 82nd Airborne seized this narrow causeway across the German-flooded Merderet marshes at appalling cost. The “Iron Mike” statue stands facing the ford, watching over the meadows where so many paratroopers fell.
