The easternmost beach, assaulted by British troops and Free French commandos.
Sword Beach was assigned to the 3rd British Infantry Division. The Kieffer Commandos — the only French unit to land on 6 June — came ashore at Ouistreham. The push toward Caen was halted by stiff German resistance.
