A stopper on the road to Caen, Tilly changed hands twenty-three times in savage fighting between the British 7th Armoured Division and Panzer Lehr. The village was 90% destroyed. The Notre-Dame-du-Val chapel now houses a battle museum, a short walk from the British war cemetery.
